Across America by Rail

In an earlier post, I talked about my love for traveling and history. I've spent the past 7 years traveling around the world but haven't seen much of America. So, along with my trusted Passepartout, in this case, Becky, we are going on a jaunt by rail across America. When I was growing up, no book captured my imagination like Around the World in 80 days and Phileas Fogg is still my fictional hero. In the book, Fogg arrives in San Francisco by steamship from Yokohama and takes an eastbound train across the Rockies. On October 25, Becky Passepartout and I will be taking two westbound trains, tracing Fogg's journey backwards. We will take Amtrak's Capitol Limited to Chicago and then take the famous California Zephyr to Emeryville, CA, right outside San Francisco. The California Zephyr goes from Chicago-Omaha-Denver-Salt Lake City-Reno-San Francisco. It goes through Moffett Tunnel and through the Rockies. We will spend 4 days in San Francisco and then fly Virgin America back. It's going to be a fabulous trip!!! :-)
